Moremi Game Reserve is located in the Okavango Delta. This is possibly the most productive area for wildlife viewing within the delta. Aside from the wetlands, it consists of a dry peninsula, which is excellent for classic game-drive safaris and offers more wildlife sightings than the mokoro (dugout canoe) trips. All the Big Five are present.
Moremi Game Reserve is situated in the central and eastern areas of the Okavango Delta.
Contained within an area of approximately 3900 sq kms, here land and Delta meet to create an exceedingly picturesque preserve of floodplains – either seasonally or perennially wet, waterways, lagoons, pools, pans, grasslands and riparian, riverine and mopane forests.
This makes for spectacular game viewing and bird watching, including all major, naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region, and over 400 species of birds, many migratory and some endangered. Savannah game includes lion, elephant, antelope and buffalo, and thickly wooded areas, home to wild dog and leopard. All Big Five are present and game viewing is excellent year-round. Four of the Big Five are easily seen. Both black and white rhino have been re-introduced, but sightings remain rare.
It is because of the bold, local Batawana people that this area was proclaimed Moremi Game Reserve in 1963, making Moremi the oldest and first protected reserve of the Okavango Delta.
July to OctoberBest Wildlife viewing
July to October Can be busy but vast enough
Big Five are with any different landscapes
November to March as many migrants are present and breeding
Moremi Game Reserve can be visited throughout the year, but the best time for wildlife viewing is in the dry months, from July to October.
The wet months, from January to March, are less ideal because some areas become inaccessible and some lodges close but game is still abundant.
