With no borders between the Linyanti Game Reserve and neighbouring Chobe NP, the animals migrate freely across. The Linyanti Swamp system, created by a big bend in the Linyanti River, attracts large herds of animals, especially elephant and the rare African Wild Dog.
Located to the north of Savuti, adjacent to the Linyanti River, the Linyanti Concession covers 1,250km2 and features mopane forest, riverine and open woodlands, lagoons and flood plains.
The Linyanti is an essential part of the Okavango experience, so you can see the contrast between the wetland areas of the inner Delta and the desert areas on the fringe. There are large concentrations of lion, leopard, African wild dog, roan antelope, sable antelope, hippopotamus and herds of African elephant. The rarer red lechwe, sitatunga and Nile crocodiles also occur in the area.
Bird diversity is rich. In the riverine forest along the Linyanti River you will find birds such as Swamp Boubous, Collard Sunbirds, White-rumped Babblers, Hartlaubs Babbler, Allen’s Gallinule and Schalow’s Louries. In summer, Carmine Bee-eaters nest along the river banks as well as Thick-billed Cuckoo’s and Narina Trogons. Racket-tailed Rollers, Bradfields Hornbills, Bennett’s Woodpeckers and Arnott’s Chat’s are common. In the dry grassland areas, there are Kori Bustards, Ostriches and Secretary Birds. Many raptors species prevail including Bateleur, Tawny, Martial, Black-Breasted Snake Eagles and Fish Eagles. Gymnogenes are commonly seen and in December you will often see Wahlberg and Steppe Eagles. You may be lucky enough to see Giant Eagle Owl’s.Numerous waterfowl are found in the swamps and lagoons along the Linyanti River. These include the rare Slaty’s Egrets, the more common Black Egrets, Rufus Bellied Herons, Wattled Cranes, African Rails and Long-toed Plovers. African Skimmers are also commonly seen.
May to OctobeBest general wildlife viewing
July to OctoberThe park never gets crowded
4 of the Big Five present and good park infrastructure
November to April during the wet season
Linyanti Concession can be visited any time of the year, but the best time for general wildlife viewing – elephant specifically – is in the dry months, from May to October. However, the Wet season is the time to see the zebra migration. In November, the zebras foal in Savuti, and they congregate around Linyanti between February and April. There are also numerous Hippos in the Linyanti River all through the year, and a game viewing river cruise is a wonderful way to see them.
