Chobe Riverfront

Botswana's first and most diverse national park

The Chobe is one of Africa’s magical rivers, and the best way to explore the park is by boat. In the late afternoon, big herds of elephants and buffalo come to drink. There are plenty of hippos and crocs in the river, and the birdlife is phenomenal. Predator sightings are easier on game drives.

Overview

Situated in the extreme Northeast of Botswana, Chobe Riverfront features the lush floodplains of the Chobe River as well as dense woodland of mahogany, teak and other hardwoods.

Large breeding herds of elephants,  giraffe, sable and Cape buffalo are resident here. Lion and leopard are frequently sighted while wild dog sightings are not uncommon. Rhino are absent.

The flood plains are the only place in Botswana where the puku antelope can be seen. Birding is amazing as large numbers of carmine bee eaters nest in the riverbanks in season and when in flood, a huge variety of water birds flock to the area.

A trip to Chobe is not complete without a boat trip on the beautiful river itself. This allows you to see most of the park’s interesting wildlife and birdlife from a different perspective. Aside from the allure for birders, being on the river is the best place for budding photographers to take spectacular images of the vast herds of elephants on the river’s lush green banks and islands or even crossing the river.

When to go

Chobe Riverfront can be visited throughout the year.

Wildlife migrates through the park with the seasons and the riverfront area is best visited in the dry months, from May to October. August to October are the optimum months for wildlife viewing here, but it gets extremely hot at that time.

During the wet months, animals like the herds of Burchell’s zebra migrate south.
