Tour Highlights

Overview

Nxai Pan is an extensive grass plain, part of the old lake bed, which is more generously covered with acacia trees. In the south of Nxai Pan, Baines’ Baobabs comprise a clump of large baobab trees, rendered immortal in 1862 by painter Thomas Baines, a member of Livingstone’s expedition.

The Makgadikgadi Pan is also all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi  and is technically not a single pan, but many pans with sandy desert in between. The wet season brings migratory birds such as ducks, geese and great white pelicans. The pan is home of one of only two breeding populations of greater flamingos in southern Africa. Years of scientific study have resulted in several meerkat colonies in Makgadikgadi being semi-habituated. On this tour we visit such a colony.

Nata Bird Sanctuary is one of the largest breeding sites of Lesser and Greater flamingo in the world but also boasts a healthy population of other birds and animals.

Chobe National Park never disappoints when it comes to lion sightings and we visit this area by road as well as by boat, along the Chobe River.

Completing our tour at the famous Victoria Falls will leave you undeniably in love with Africa.

When to go

These destinations offer different highlights depending on the season and the reason to visit. June to December is the best for  wildlife viewing as it is dry and animals congregate at the water sources. December to May, the wet summer months, are best for wildlife viewing and birding at the pans. Young are born and the migrant birds arrive in flocks.
