One of the most endangered and awe inspiring animals to encounter while on safari must be the Rhino. Today, very few survive outside national parks and reserves due to persistent poaching and habitat loss over many decades. This tour will take you to a sanctuary where they are protected.
We start this tour with a visit to the 10,800 ha Orapa Game Park, renowned for its efforts to save the white rhino from extinction. Many other species now also call this park home.
Lekhubu Island is a rock outcrop which was once covered with water in Lake Makgadikgadi. Now dry, this scrap of rock and its ghostly baobab trees is surrounded by a sea of salt. The rocks on the north-eastern side are all smoothed by wave action, while on the opposite leeward side are thousands of small, rounded pebbles, which used to protrude as a tiny wave-washed beach.
Central Kalahari Game Reserve takes up 9% of Botswana’s surface area and is especially renowned for its predator sightings, such as cheetah, hyena and the famous black-maned Kalahari lions. The starry nights around the campfire will be remembered and longed for long after your visit.
The Rhino sanctuary can be visited any time of the year however the best time to visit the Central Kalahari is during the wet months, from December to March when young are born offering great predator sightings. Migrant birds are present. It can however, be very hot.
April and May are also good wildlife viewing months as the pans dry and animals congregate at the waterholes.
