Moremi &
Chobe NP

On this tour, we depart from Maun and travel north to Moremi GR, Khwai Community Concession, Savuti and finally the Chobe Riverfront. The tour ends in Kasane, a springboard for further travels to Victoria Falls.

We stay in perfectly situated, unfenced community camps like Kaziikini, run by the Sankuyo Community and Magotho, run by the Khwai Development Trust.

Boat cruises on the beautiful Okavango and Chobe River are a highlight.

Tour Highlights

Overview

David Livingstone called this land ‘country full of rivers’. Moremi Game Reserve is the oldest and first protected reserve of the Okavango Delta, named after Batawana tribe member, Chief Moremi III. It boasts a striking number of wildlife species, birdlife and a diverse landscape; combining mopane woodland, floodplains, fairytale like lagoons, papyrus rivers and acacia forests.

The Khwai Community Camps are located to the north of Moremi Game Reserve and to the south of Chobe National Park which serves as not only one of the country’s best managed Community Based Natural Resource Management Programs but also a perfect stop over when traveling between the two national reserves. This area is teeming with bird and wildlife thanks to the river systems.

Savuti, to the north of Moremi and Khwai, is famous for its predators, especially its resident lion and spotted hyena populations as well as for its mysterious and fascinating channel. It runs a distance of 100 kilometers from the Chobe River and was flowing in Livingstone’s time.  It was dry in 1880, and remained dry for about 70 years. It flooded again in 1957 and again in 2010.

The Chobe Riverfront is the northern most part of the Chobe National Park running along the length of the Chobe River. This is where the four countries of Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe meet and is also where the Zambezi and Chobe rivers converge. Thanks to the river, this area boasts almost guaranteed lion sightings as well as impressive herds of elephants and buffalo. A boat cruise on the Chobe River at sunset, listening to the call of African Fish Eagles is an unforgettable experience.

When to go

The best time to visit is during the wet months, from December to March when young are born offering great predator sightings. Migrant birds are present. It can however, be very hot.

April and May are also good wildlife viewing months as the pans dry and animals congregate at the waterholes.
