National Parks & Game Reserves

Botswana offers some of the best safaris on the African continent; while other countries may have invented the safari, Botswana has perfected it.

The combination of epic wildlife populations in the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, with the world’s largest network of salt pans in Makgadikgadi Pans and the desert-specialist animals of the Kalahari Desert, makes for endless Botswana safari packages and possibilities.

National Parks & Game Reserves

dry desert, saltpans, savannah grasslands and delta waterway

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is Botswana’s biggest reserve and is situated in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. This is pure, untrammeled wilderness. The inhospitable desert habitat doesn’t support the wide variety of safari animals found in greener destinations – but sightings in this arid landscape are special.

OKAVANGO DELTA

The Okavango Delta attracts a huge number of herbivores in the Dry season between June and November, which attracts the carnivores as well. Wildlife viewing is superb, with hippo, elephant and buffalo often spotted on land and from the water.

Makgadikgadi Pans GR

Makgadikgadi is part of the Kalahari basin and has some of the largest saltpans in the world. The shimmering, cracked crust doesn’t look as if it could support any form of life. After good rains, however, this desolate landscape transforms when new grass attracts thousands of animals. As the pans fill up, flocks of pelican and flamingo settle in as well.

Nxai Pans NP

Part of the Makgadikgadi complex, Nxai Pan NP comprises several large pans. Unlike the salt-encrusted pans at Makgadikgadi, Nxai Pan is a waterless, fossil pan covered in grass with acacia islands. The area comes to life after the summer rains in December, when big herds of migrating zebra and wildebeest, accompanied by other grazers, arrive to feast on the new grasses.

Moremi GR

Moremi Game Reserve is located in the Okavango Delta. This is possibly the most productive area for wildlife viewing within the delta. Aside from the wetlands, it consists of a dry peninsula, which is excellent for classic game-drive safaris and offers more wildlife sightings than the mokoro (dugout canoe) trips. All the Big Five are present.

Riverfront (Chobe NP)

The Chobe is one of Africa’s magical rivers, and the best way to explore the park is by boat. In the late afternoon, big herds of elephants and buffalo come to drink. There are plenty of hippos and crocs in the river, and the birdlife is phenomenal. Predator sightings are easier on game drives.

Savuti (Chobe NP)

The Savuti Marsh is the relic of a large inland lake whose water supply was cut a long time ago by tectonic movements. Nowadays the marsh is fed by the erratic Savuti Channel, which dries up for long periods then curiously flows again, a consequence of tectonic activity in the area.

Linyanti Game Reserve

There are no borders between the Linyanti Game Reserve and neighbouring Chobe NP, and animals migrate freely across. The Linyanti Swamp system, created by a big bend in the Linyanti River, attracts large herds of animals, especially elephant.

Khwai Community Area

The Khwai Community Area is located in the heart of the Botswana wilderness, located to the north of Moremi Game Reserve and to the south of Chobe National Park, it serves as not only one of the country’s best managed Community-Based Natural Resource Management Programs but also a perfect stopover when travelling between the two national reserves.

Victoria falls

Victoria Falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi River in southern Africa, which provides a habitat for several unique species of plants and animals. It is located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and is one of the world’s largest waterfalls, with a width of 1,708 m (5,604 ft).
